Best Disc Golf Courses in Oulu

The best disc golf courses in Oulu are Virpiniemi DiscGolfPark, Meri-Toppila DiscGolfPark and Pikkarala Frisbeegolf, as they each serve a different type of player. Virpiniemi is the area's most demanding competition course, Meri-Toppila works well for both beginners and more experienced players, and Pikkarala is the only course area in the region with a separate winter layout. In addition, the Oulu region has several free forest and park courses, each offering a different type of terrain. The best course depends on whether you are looking for a challenge, free access or year round play.

What is the best disc golf course in Oulu for experienced players?

Virpiniemi DiscGolfPark is Oulu's most challenging and best known competition course, making it the best option for more experienced players. The course opened in 2012 and was designed by Erno Väyrynen and Pasi Laukkanen. It is located in hilly forest terrain close to the sea. Hole 12 is 185 metres long, making it the longest single disc golf hole in Finland. The course was redesigned in spring 2024, and the total par increased to 63 as the overall length of the layout grew.

  • There is a café near the course and plenty of parking is available
  • Disc golf sets can be rented from the sports institute next to the course
  • The course is not playable during winter, so plan your visit for the snow free season

Which disc golf course in Oulu is best for beginners?

Meri-Toppila DiscGolfPark is a good choice for beginners because it is free to play and combines easier and more challenging holes within the same round. The course opened in 2007 and is located by the sea around five kilometres from central Oulu. Its quality is also reflected in the fact that it hosted the 2016 European Disc Golf Championships, so beginners get to practise on the same fairways used in a major championship. Before heading out, it is worth choosing suitable beginner discs, as using the wrong type of disc can make the first throws unnecessarily difficult.

  • There are no toilets on the course, with the nearest services available at the Meri-Toppila kiosk and pizzeria
  • Weekly competitions are held on the course, and beginners can also take part
  • The area is a public park, so other people using the park must be taken into account when throwing

Where can you play disc golf in Oulu during winter?

Pikkarala Frisbeegolf is the only course area in the Oulu region that maintains a separate winter course for the snowy season. The area's Tek course opened in 2019, has 18 holes and a par of 57, and places an emphasis on accuracy thanks to its technical forest terrain. In Frisbeegolfradat.fi's 2023 winter course survey, Pikkarala was voted the best maintained winter course in the Oulu region and finished third in Finland overall. Playing at Pikkarala requires a fee, and current prices and ticket options are available on the course's own website.

  • The area is dedicated exclusively to disc golf, so there are no other outdoor users sharing the course
  • Playing rights are available as day passes or annual passes, with a separate price for members of Finnish Disc Golf Association clubs
  • The area includes holes of different difficulty levels, so experienced players will also find plenty of challenge
