What is an anhyzer shot?

An anhyzer is a disc golf release angle where the outer edge of the disc is tilted downward and the inner edge upward. This angle causes the disc to naturally turn right for a right-handed backhand (RHBH). Alongside hyzer and flat, it’s one of the three core release angles—and a key tool for shaping lines and navigating obstacles.

How is an anhyzer different from other shots?

In disc golf, release angle plays a major role in flight shape. An anhyzer differs from other shots purely by angle. While a hyzer tilts the disc inward and a flat release keeps it level, an anhyzer sends the outer edge downward at release.

For a right-handed player, this creates a right-moving flight. For a left-handed player, the same angle produces a left-turning line. The more aggressive the angle, the more pronounced the turn during flight.

When should you use an anhyzer?

Anhyzer lines are valuable in a wide range of situations. They’re especially useful when you need to:

  • Shape around obstacles on the right side (RHBH)
  • Create turning lines with or against the wind
  • Land softly on a drifting, right-finishing flight
  • Maximize the turn of understable discs
  • Match a fairway that naturally moves right

Anhyzer is also effective when you want to minimize fade at the end of the flight. A well-executed release can hold the angle for most—or all—of the flight.

How to throw an anhyzer correctly

The key to a clean anhyzer is controlling the release angle. Start with a slight angle before working into more extreme releases.

Core steps for building a consistent anhyzer:

  • Set the outer edge slightly lower already in your grip
  • Lean your upper body subtly toward the throwing side
  • Match your release angle to your initial grip angle
  • Keep the wrist stable through the throw
  • Start with shorter throws and build up power gradually

A common mistake is trying to force the angle using only the wrist. A reliable anhyzer comes from coordinated body rotation and a consistent release—not manipulation at the last moment.

Which discs work best for anhyzer?

Any disc can be thrown on an anhyzer, but some amplify the flight more than others. Understable discs naturally turn right (RHBH), making them ideal for pronounced anhyzer lines.

Stable and overstable discs require a steeper release angle to achieve the same movement. However, they can offer more controlled anhyzer lines with less risk of excessive turn.

For practice, neutral fairway drivers and mids are a solid choice. They give clear feedback on your angle without overly unpredictable flight.

Build your anhyzer game with the right discs

Mastering the anhyzer opens up new shot shapes and adds depth to your game. It takes repetition, but the payoff shows quickly in smarter line choices and better scoring.
