How Do You Start Competing in Disc Golf?

You can start competing in disc golf through your local club’s or local course’s weekly events, which do not require a competition licence. When you want to move on to official sanctioned events, you join a member club and get a competition licence. Finland has a strong setup for this, with more than 200 member clubs and competitions organised weekly across the country. The path progresses logically from low-threshold weekly events all the way to Finnish Championship-level competition.

Where should you start competing?

The best place to start competing is weekly events, which are low-threshold competitions open to everyone. You do not need a competition licence, and the entry fee is usually around €0–5. Typically, players play one round at a fixed time on the same course, and registration is done online in advance.

For weekly events, it is enough that you understand the basic rules of disc golf at a general level. They are a good way to learn how competition works, measure your level against other local players and get tips from more experienced players. Many players also notice that training motivation increases when there is a score on the line.

Do I need a competition licence?

You do not need a licence for weekly events, but for official sanctioned competitions you need an SFL competition licence. Getting a licence requires you to be a member of an SFL member club. In practice, the order is: join a club, get a licence and register for competitions.

Club membership makes sense once your number of rounds can no longer be counted on one hand. The federation’s sanctioned licence events are also under the sport’s international governing body, the PDGA, so you are competing as part of the international system. In a competition environment, players are also expected to know the etiquette followed on the course and give others space to perform.

How do I register for a competition?

SFL competitions are registered through Disc Golf Metrix, which is the federation’s official competition system. Official competitions can be found at sfl.dgmtrx.com or through the Metrix search function. You choose the competition you want and register according to the event instructions.

Weekly events are usually also registered in the same system in advance, although some organisers allow registration at the course when the event starts. Finland also hosts international events, such as PDGA Majors and Disc Golf Pro Tour events. These have their own registration systems and participation requirements, which should always be checked separately for each event.

What different competition levels are there in disc golf?

Disc golf competition has four main levels, progressing from low-threshold leagues to Finnish Championship events. Requirements and entry fees increase with the level:

  • PDGA league: does not require a competition licence, so anyone interested can participate. One round per event, entry fee usually €0–10.
  • Standalone events (PDGA C-tier): the most common competition format, requires a competition licence. Duration 1–2 days and 1–3 rounds, entry fee usually €0–30.
  • SFL tours, such as amateur, masters and pro tours: require a licence and often tour-specific requirements, such as sufficient PDGA rating or an officials test. Entry fee usually €30–100.
  • Finnish Championships: the highest level, requiring a licence and an officials test. Duration 2–4 days and 2–4 rounds, entry fee usually €50–100. Places are allocated either through rating or qualifiers.

Behind these levels is PDGA rating, which you receive from every rated competition round you play. The average of your rounds forms your rating, and it determines which competition divisions you are eligible to enter. Rating updates on the second Tuesday of every month, so your progress becomes visible as a concrete number from event to event.

For competitions, it is worth having a setup that includes a putter, midrange and driver for different throwing situations. Explore the disc golf disc selection at DiscKing.eu and build a disc lineup that works for competition.
