What Is Disc Golf?
Disc golf is a sport where players throw specially designed discs toward a metal target basket. The goal is to complete the course in as few throws as possible. The game follows the same core idea as traditional golf, but instead of clubs and balls, players use flying discs. Disc golf is suitable for all ages and doesn’t require advanced athletic skills or a big financial investment to get started.
How do you play disc golf?
A round of disc golf starts from the tee area of each hole. Players take turns throwing, and each shot is played from where the previous one landed. The hole is completed once the disc comes to rest in the basket, either in the tray or supported by the chains.
The throwing order is based on distance—the player farthest from the basket throws first. All throws are counted, and the player with the lowest total score wins the round. While disc golf is technically an individual sport, it’s most often played in small groups of 3–5 players.
What are disc golf courses like?
A typical disc golf course includes 9 or 18 holes. Hole lengths can vary from around 50 meters to well over 250 meters. Like in golf, each hole has a par rating based on its length and difficulty, usually ranging from par 2 to par 5.
Courses are often set in parks or natural areas, where trees, bushes, rocks, and water hazards create unique challenges. Finland alone has close to 1,000 courses, and most of them are free to play year-round.
What equipment do you need to get started?
Getting into disc golf is simple and affordable. All you need is comfortable outdoor footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, and one or more discs. For beginners, 1–3 discs are more than enough for the first rounds.
Discs are designed for different types of throws:
- Driver: A sharp-edged disc built for long-distance drives, capable of flying over 150 meters.
- Midrange: A versatile disc for controlled, mid-distance throws—often the best choice if you’re starting with just one disc.
- Putter: A thicker, blunt-edged disc designed for short, accurate throws and finishing into the basket.
Why is disc golf so popular in Finland?
Disc golf has become one of the most popular sports in Finland. A 2021 study showed that around 15% of the adult population is interested in the sport. Its popularity comes from its accessibility—it’s affordable, easy to start, and suitable for all ages.
There’s no dress code, no membership requirement, and most courses are free. The sport offers a relaxed way to stay active outdoors while combining strategy, skill, and social interaction.
