How to Play Disc Golf

Disc golf is played by throwing a disc from the tee area into a target basket in as few throws as possible. A course typically includes 9 to 18 holes, each starting from a designated tee. The player with the lowest total number of throws at the end of the round wins. Getting started is easy, as the core idea of disc golf is simple, and Finland alone offers over a thousand courses—most of them free to play.

What is the goal of disc golf?

The objective in disc golf is to complete the course from start to finish using as few throws as possible. Each hole begins from the tee and ends when the disc comes to rest in the basket, either in the tray or supported by the chains. The player with the lowest total score wins the round. The game closely resembles traditional golf, but instead of clubs and balls, you use discs.

How do you get started?

Your first round begins by finding a nearby course. While you can start with just one disc, a small set of three or four discs gives you a much better experience, covering drives, approaches, and putting. Once at the course, head to the first tee where you’ll usually find a sign showing the distance, par, and any special rules like out-of-bounds areas.

How is a hole played?

Play begins from the tee, with the throwing order either agreed upon or randomly decided. After the opening throws, the player farthest from the basket always throws next. Each shot is taken from where the previous one landed, marked either by the disc itself or a mini marker. The hole is completed once the disc is successfully in the basket.

What rules should beginners know?

At the moment of release, at least one supporting point must be in contact with the ground within the throwing area. After releasing the disc, you may step forward, except when putting from within 10 meters. Players are responsible for their throws and must ensure the fairway is clear. Respect others by staying quiet and still during their throws, play the course as you find it without altering obstacles, and always follow the intended hole order and course signage.

What are the most common throwing techniques?

The two fundamental throws in disc golf are the backhand and the forehand. In a backhand throw, the arm moves across the body with power generated from the legs and hips rather than just the arm. The forehand, often compared to a sidearm in tennis, relies more on wrist snap and finger control. For short distances, putting is typically done with a controlled push motion aimed directly at the basket.

What discs are used?

Disc golf discs are smaller and heavier than traditional frisbees, usually around 21–22 cm in diameter and weighing between 150–180 grams. They are divided into three main categories based on use. Drivers are designed for maximum distance, approach discs offer control for mid-range shots, and putters are built for precision at shorter distances.

Can you play alone?

Disc golf works just as well solo as it does in a group. While most casual rounds are played in groups of two to four, practicing alone is a great way to improve your technique and learn the course at your own pace. Playing with others adds a social element and provides opportunities to learn new skills and gain feedback.

What do par, birdie, and bogey mean?

Par represents the expected number of throws an experienced player should need to complete a hole. Finishing a par 3 in three throws means you scored par. Completing it in two throws is a birdie, while four throws result in a bogey. Higher scores follow the same pattern, such as double or triple bogey. While experienced players aim to score under par, beginners can consider par a solid target.

How do you stay safe on the course?

Safety always comes first. If your disc is heading toward other players or bystanders, shout “Fore!” to warn them. Always make sure the fairway is clear before throwing and wait until the group ahead is at a safe distance. Respect other players’ focus and remember that courses are often shared spaces with other outdoor users.
