What Are the Benefits of Joining a Disc Golf Club?
Joining a disc golf club brings concrete benefits: guided practice, cheaper or free weekly events, indoor winter training sessions and the right to get an SFL competition licence. In most clubs, the membership fee is only a few dozen euros per year, so for an active player the value is strong. There are more than 200 SFL member clubs in Finland, and in practice you can join almost any of them regardless of where you live. Membership is not mandatory for a casual player, but it starts to make sense once you are playing weekly.
What training benefits does club membership offer?
As a club member, you get access to guided practice, indoor winter sessions and the club’s training equipment. This speeds up development clearly compared to playing alone.
Many clubs organise guided activities such as beginner introductions and coaching. Some sessions are aimed at specific groups, such as juniors, beginners or women. In guided sessions, a beginner learns the rules of the sport and basic technique faster than by figuring things out alone on the course.
In winter, membership often determines whether you can practise properly at all. Many clubs book heated indoor facilities for their members. Clubs also have equipment that individual players usually do not need to buy themselves, such as radar speed trackers and driving nets, which add new dimensions to training.
Do members get cheaper access to competitions?
Yes. Most clubs organise low-threshold weekly events where members can participate for free or at a lower fee than non-members.
Weekly events are the lowest competition level in the sport, and the entry fee is typically only €0–5. You can often join them without club membership, but members usually pay a lower entry fee or nothing at all. For juniors, weekly events are completely free in many clubs.
Membership also opens up events that non-members cannot enter. These include club championships and shared club trips. For regular players, these events are one of the most concrete reasons to join.
Do I need membership for a competition licence?
Yes. An SFL competition licence can only be purchased by a member of an affiliated club, and the licence is required for PDGA events under the Finnish federation.
There are more than 500 of these official competitions in Finland every year. The licence also includes seasonal membership in the international governing body PDGA and a PDGA rating, which shows your playing level. In 2026, the adult competition licence costs €70 and the junior licence €36, plus a small transaction fee charged by Suomisport.
Important distinction: you do not need a licence for casual play or weekly events. A licence is mandatory only if you want to participate in federation-sanctioned competitions. Through a club, you can also purchase Sporttiturva insurance, either together with the licence or separately.
How much does membership cost and where does the money go?
The membership fee is usually around €20–60 per year, depending on the club. Part of the fee is directed through the club to the SFL and supports the development of the sport nationally.
The rest stays with the club, which usually maintains courses through volunteer work. Membership fees help keep the nearest courses playable and support the building of new ones together with municipalities. Finland has more than 1,000 disc golf courses, and almost all of them are free to play, so course maintenance relies heavily on club work.
Club membership numbers also influence how cities and municipalities view new course projects. As a member, you directly support playing conditions in your own area.
Who should join a disc golf club?
Membership is especially worthwhile for players who play regularly, want to compete or want to practise indoors during winter. For them, a membership fee of a few dozen euros pays itself back quickly.
If you only play disc golf a couple of times during the summer, membership is not necessary. Courses are almost always free, and a casual round does not require cards or licences. For an active player, the situation changes: guided practice, winter sessions, cheaper weekly events and the possibility of getting a competition licence make membership worthwhile within a single season. For juniors, the membership fee is often only a fraction of the adult price, so the barrier to joining is low for children and young players.
